Every year millions of people join slimming clubs or buy books on the latest diet trends in an attempt to lose weight but there is more to successful weight loss than just counting the calories!
These methods produce varying results but all rely on self control to ensure that the right number of points are consumed each day to facilitate weight loss.
Where as this may be fine for some people, others are less than successful and the main reason for this is that although these diet programmes provide the conscious processes to allow for a healthier diet and therefore weight control, there is another side that these plans and clubs often neglect to address- the unconscious mind.
The unconscious mind is the part of our mind that is really in the driving seat- It is the part that controls all of our automatic functions such as breathing, heartbeat, blinking etc. It is also the part of us that learns patterns and stores memories. It does this via filters taking in the information which it then distorts, deletes and generalizes to fit in with past experiences. Because it doesn’t always take in the full information on offer, it can learn patterns that are not as useful as they could be- the unconscious mind often only notices the benefit of the pattern and not the downside to it.
An example of this is when someone starts smoking- the unconscious mind may well notice that the first cigarette tastes disgusting, but this is overridden by the postivie perceptions and feelings that it associates with smoking such as fitting in with peers or the percieved calming feeling.
Similar pattens can be found in over eating which can often be linked to emotions from childhood or an specific event in the past. We are often told to clear our plate or given food as a reward (or have it witheld as punishment which can lead to a greater desire for it) and these patterns are often the most significant factor in overeating- Everyone consciouly knows that eating too many cakes and biscuits is bad for you, but people still do it because that knowledge is conscious, but our good old unconscious is really running things and if it has decided that cakes and biscuits lead to a feeling of fulfilment or happiness, that is what you will crave until that craving is satiated.
So with this struggle between conscious dieting and the unconscious mind with it’s emotional eating habits, you may find that you can go for quite a while with the conscious mind winning the battle but eventually, you’ll succumb to the unconscious mind’s desires. This is where Hypnotherapy and NLP can be so useful- they allow communciation with the unconscious mind and allow it to find new and better ways of getting the same benefits that the cakes and biscuits used to give.
Using NLP and Hypnotherapy, you can:
Change the way you eat
Address the emotional reasons behind over eating
Let yourself take control
Show you new ways to feel good about yourself because when you feel good about yourself, you look after yourself better!
