Because my main interest as a therapist is helping people to get freedom from their phobias, I have dedicated a whole page to the subject of hypnotherapy for phobias.

Phobias are a learned unconscious response to a stimulus. Apparently, we are born with only two fears- falling and loud noises. Any other fears develop as we get older. Often our parents shouting at us (often a very loud noise) can help us to know what is and isn’t dangerous as we grow up.

Our unconscious mind loves associating things with each other and this is often very useful for us. Unfortunately, some of the patterns it learns can be very limiting for us.

A phobia of something is a fear that we consciously know is silly, but unconsciously cannot face. Our unconscious mind sends out all the warning signals that are wired in to us to avoid danger such as sweating, rapid heartbeat, shakes, basically what is called the “fight or flight” response.

Phobias can be so extreme that even a cartoon of the offending object or animal is enough to trigger this response.

So how can Hypnotherapy and NLP help?

Hypnotherapy and NLP allow communication with the unconscious mind, allowing the therapist to change the automatic reaction to the item in question. It is almost like reprogramming the mind to repsond differently or to be desensitised to the problem. This often leads to the client suddenly being free of the phobia and wondering what the fuss was all about in the first place as the unconscious mind no longer associates the stimulus with the flight or fright response.

To me, this is a sure sign of success and what I love about helping people with phobias- the sudden change that can happen with the client can be amazing!

So, if you want to become free of your phobia, no matter how unusual or silly you may think it is, feel free to contact me.
